Lockdown 2020 - Abstract Expressions
The coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and the subsequent lockdown has given us all time for reflection.
The human response to the crises has inspired a series of abstract paintings representing the various shared emotions that have carried us through times of difficulty.
We recognise that life is strengthened by the appreciation and recognition of a universal spirit.
Courage
The intention whilst painting the Lion was to paint in a more casual and freer style, using less detail and allowing the subject’s expression of courage to emerge within a looser abstract depiction. The dark background was laid onto the canvas using heavy strokes of acrylic paint using a knife and then the lighter tones of the Lion’s mane was begun but as the creature’s expression of courage was being depicted, there was a need to paint this creature with more care , Subsequently, this painting is less abstract but the meaning behind the portrait was to express Courage which is still evident. The Lion in this painting looks aged as if he has experienced many challenges in life, but he stands resolute and strong, having emerged from the shadows prepared to confront the unknown.
